Visit the Abbey of Saint-Roman
BeaucairePresentation
an exceptional site perched atop a hill overlooking the Rhône River.
Description
The Abbey of Saint-Roman is an exceptional historic site, a remarkable rock-cut necropolis featuring hundreds of tombs carved into the stone, along with monastic remains unique in Western Europe.
Founded before the 10th century, the abbey preserves outstanding features such as the chapel, monastic cells, cisterns and storage cellars, offering valuable insight into troglodyte monastic life.
Listed as a Historic Monument, the abbey boasts breathtaking views over the Rhône River, the Alpilles and the Provence countryside.
From the supervised car park, a winding path leads through Mediterranean scrubland to the top of the hill, where visitors are rewarded with a fascinating site and a stunning panoramic view.
The admission ticket also includes free entry to the Mas des Tourelles in Beaucaire and offers a reduced rate for the Archaeological Museum of Beaucaire.
Residents of Beaucaire, Bellegarde, Jonquières-Saint-Vincent, Fourques and Vallabrègues are granted free admission upon presentation of proof of address.
Admission is also free for job seekers and students, upon presentation of valid supporting documents.
Please note that the last admission is 30 minutes before closing, particularly at lunchtime and at the end of the day.
In the event of bad weather, the site may be exceptionally closed.
Access to the abbey requires a 10 to 15-minute uphill walk through Mediterranean scrubland.
The car park is supervised during the site’s opening hours.
Please note that the site does not have toilet facilities and, due to its access and layout, is not recommended for visitors with reduced mobility.
Step back in time and enjoy an unforgettable journey into the heart of the Terre d’Argence!
